NORTHEAST OHIO CHAPTER
SOCIETY FOR TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION
Leadership Workshop
The Northeast Ohio Society for Technical Communication is proud to host this full-day workshop, coordinated by Dr. Jackie Damrau, STC Fellow.
What is it?
In this workshop, participants will learn how to develop a leadership plan. A leadership plan can be built for personal use, for business use, or for use as you take on your volunteer role as an STC leader for your community.
This workshop will be a combination of table progressions, speaker-led discussions, and group participation.
By your decision to take on leadership responsibilities in STC and your local or virtual community, you have demonstrated much of what it takes to be a successful leader. Being a successful leader works well when you have an eagerness to contribute despite the unknown, a willingness to learn, a sense of excitement about the future, and a vision of what you would like to achieve.
STC leaders from the past and present designed this training material from their own volunteer work with STC and their professional lives in technical communication, training, education, document design, rhetoric, organization development, performance improvement, and technology. They all share pleasure in passing to you what they found important for themselves.

Hotels nearby
See the map of the Independence area, with at least 10 hotels listed. It has the highest concentration of hotels in the area, with many nearby restaurants. This is approximately 5 miles from the Maple Heights Library – easy to get to.
You will learn how to develop a leadership plan, recruit and reward volunteers, develop a PR campaign, partner with other organizations, and review your community’s mission statement, among many other goals.
The workshop includes eight learning modules:
Module 1: Introduction to Leadership introduces the concept of personal leadership and invites you to complete a survey on personal leadership characteristics and experience.
Module 2: Lead Your Community to Success differentiates leadership from management and suggests that both are requisite in successful organizations, including continuous communication and collaboration within the community.
Module 3: Know Your Direction and Destination invites you to learn about STC as an organization—its mission, goals, finances, and committees.
Module 4: Work as a Team Toward Goals describes the challenges and opportunities in leading and facilitating a team.
Module 5: Grow Your Own Volunteers provides valuable information on growing volunteers — the lifeblood of the organization — including recruitment, support, and recognition.
Module 6: Community Outreach describes a process by creating a marketing mindset for reaching out beyond your community.
Module 7: Society Relations (Local and Global) offers avenues to Society resources.
Module 8: Plans for Going Forward summarizes key points and describes how you might use your Leadership Plan for your own purposes and for the Society’s well-being.
