Please join the Northeast Ohio STC community for its February 8, 2012 Programs meeting! We are extremely fortunate to have Joe Welinske traveling to Cleveland to deliver this presentation to NEO STC. This topic is applicable to technical writers, editors, information architects, Web designers and developers, trainers, or anyone who has an interest in developing user interface text for smartphone applications.
Topic:
Development Techniques for User Interface Text and Web-based Content in Smartphone Applications
Do you need help understanding the basics of mobile application creation? This session will explore user interface text and content delivery for iPhone/iPad, Android, and generalizations for other mobile platforms as well. This session is technical, but does not require any experience with programming.
Since mobile devices have reduced screen real estate, it puts a great weight on the words and phrases appearing in the applications. The first word to come to mind is rarely the best word. Usability techniques can help you choose the perfect word for every situation, and make your application that much easier to use. By understanding how application creation is done, you can do much of the design work on your own.
To deliver your content, especially for training and user assistance content, being able to provide your content as a web-based deliverable inside of an application has several advantages over embedding it in code. One advantage is that there is no need for your content to go through the Apple application review process. A second advantage is that you can update the content at any time without affecting installed applications. A final advantage is that you can do all of your work without the need for programming resources.
