Meeting Review: April Employment Event
Kim Lindsey
Our monthly chapter meeting for April was held at Tri-C's Corporate College in Westlake.
This was our first meeting with an employment-centered format, but surely won't be our last - in fact, many attendees suggested making it an annual event.
At the beginning of the meeting, guests munched appetizers while perusing job postings distributed throughout the room and visiting informational tables. These tables were manned by chapter members and representatives from the acadamic community who provided useful advice on such topics as resumes, portfolio-building, interviewing and networking.
Dinner was an all-you-can-eat pasta buffet with various pastas, sauces, and optional grilled chicken.
After dinner, a panel of six accomplished writers shared their experiences and advice with the group. The variety of their expertise showcased the breadth of opportunities possible in our field, while their unanimous urgings to "Know your audience" and "Keep up with trends" kept us focused on how important the basics really are.
Overall, the meeting was a resounding success.
Heartfelt thanks to the team who made it all possible: Stephanie Webster (Programs), Jessica Hendricks (Public Relations), and Myron Shawala and Sarah Burke (Employment). Fantastic job!
